Studies were conducted by University of Washington engineers, who suggested tie-down cables to help strengthen the bridge. Hydraulic buffers were added in an attempt to help control stress to the towers. (Courtesy Peninsula Historical Society.)

Lifting cranes were installed on the wire suspension cables, and prefabricated deck steel delivered by Foss barges was positioned into place. Steel workers began at each tower and worked towards the middle, riveting them into place. The solid 8-foot-high sections offered resistance to the wind and added to Galloping Gertie’s problems.
